Fourth and fifth grade students from Rogers City Elementary visited the museum in May to learn about life sailing the Great Lakes. There’s a lot to take in – not just the artifacts and equipment used aboard those magnificent ships, but the stories told by the volunteers, many of whom have sailed themselves.

Sailing is in Rogers City’s DNA, so it’s not surprising that some of these youngsters were looking for information about family members who made their livings on the freighters. Kenzie found her great grandfather, Charles Cook, who was Third Mate on the Cedarville when it sunk on that fateful November night in 1958.
The students had a great experience visiting the museum and said as much in the thank you letters they wrote when they returned to the classroom. Several of the letters included art, which the museum volunteers really enjoyed!

If you’re an educator looking for a unique experience for your students, please consider a visit to the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum!
